How to Stay Safe During a Snowstorm

The winter season is here and, in Utah, snow is a huge part of our lives during this time of year. We’re even famous for our snow. However, no matter how beautiful snow is, it can be very dangerous if you are not prepared.

This season before the snow starts flying, make sure you and your family stay safe and prepared with these tips.

First thing, always watch or listen to the most up to date information on the weather.

Have a disaster plan and supply kit for your home and car. In your kit, include a first aid kit, canned food and can opener. bottled water, battery-operated radio, flashlight, protective clothing, and blankets. Always have your cell phone with you and make sure it is fully charged.

During a snowstorm or blizzard, if possible don’t leave your home, but if you do leave, dress in layers. Remember to wear a scarf or ski mask over your mouth and nose to protect your lungs against the extreme cold weather.

Another simple and important factor, keep a full tank of gas. Condensation can build up in the winter and cause your fuel line to freeze up.

Always let others know where you are going and be a good neighbor by checking in and making sure everything is okay with them.
